How to Prepare For Family Photos
Family portrait sessions can be the most rewarding sessions and the most difficult to plan for. From outfits to snacks, and everything in between, here are my best tips for preparing for your family photo session.
What to Expect During your Family Photo Session
I shoot most of my family portrait sessions outside in local parks an hour before sunset. Depending on the package you choose, your session could last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, unless you choose a seasonal mini session, which is usually 10 minutes. I will have several spots picked out, and I will help pose you in natural, flattering poses. I typically do a combination of full family photos, sibling photos, parent photos, and other fitting combinations to make for a great wall collage.
After your session, I will select and edit your photos according to your selected package. If you gave me permission at your session, I will post a sneak peek on my Facebook and Instagram pages. Once I have completed editing all of the photos, I will send you an email with a password, a PIN, and a link to your gallery. You will need the password to view your gallery and the PIN to download your images.
What to Wear for Family Photos
Whether your family portrait is sent out with Christmas cards or hung on the wall for years to come, you could potentially see it often and forever. If you don’t want to cringe everytime you see it, planning your outfits ahead of time is the key. Here are some things to consider while you plan:
You don’t have to match exactly. You don’t all have to wear the same pattern or even the same shirt. I recommend choosing a color palette to work with instead. That way, you complement each other without matching.
Wear what you’re comfortable in. This is especially true for kids. You won’t get nice smiles from uncomfortable kids, no matter how much you threaten them.
If you’re buying a new outfit, wear it at least once before your photoshoot to troubleshoot any quirks or malfunctions.
Prepping the Family for Family Photos
Mom: Stick with your normal look, but add a little more makeup and a little more hairspray. This is not the time to try new hair and makeup styles.
Dad: Get a haircut at least a few days before the shoot, and shave with a new blade the day of the session.
Babies: If you’re breastfeeding, avoid spicy and sugary foods that could increase reflux and spit-up. Plan ahead to make sure he/she is fed and happy.
Kids: Set out all outfits and shoes the night before. Talk them through what they can expect. Plan something fun afterward as a reward if they need the extra motivation.
Teens: Set out clothes the night before. Spot treat acne. Double does antiperspirant. Deep clean braces. Give them a responsibility or reward as needed.
Pets: Make an appointment with the groomer the week before, pick out a coordinating bandana or collar, and practice commands (sit, stay, wait, etc.).
What to Bring for Your Family Photo Session
Since your session is most likely outdoors, and we will be walking to a few locations, it’s best to pack only the bare necessities. Pack snacks for kids, milk for babies, and some makeup and a mirror for touch-ups. If you have babies that spit up, it’s always good to have backup clothes and/or something to clean up with.
I also recommend downloading some of your kids’ favorite songs on your phone before you come. Playing music during sessions can help kids relax and smile more, creating naturally happy moments.
What NOT to do Before Family Photos
Whatever happens, try not to stress. I know that is easier said than done, but if ever there were a time to laugh things off or practice deep breathing, this would be it. Stress before the shoot leads to forced smiles during the shoot.
